The Horticulturist reports directly to the golf course superintendent. Under the superintendent's supervision, the horticulturist directs and participates in the maintenance of the landscape grounds areas within the resort; supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment; and does related work as required. The Horticulturist will be responsible for, but not limited to: Designs flower beds and other planting beds within the resort landscape. Responsible for training of associates in proper trimming and pruning techniques of plant material. Designs, installs and maintains irrigation systems for landscape Instructs landscapers in routine maintenance of ornamental plantings Applies pesticides and fertilizers to ornamental plantings Advises golf course superintendent of the need for tree trimming services. Responsible for planning and supervising the maintenance of the landscape grounds; schedule work and supervises the associates and the use of equipment. Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment; supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment; supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems. Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety, personnel discipline and may also modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation. Assures that tools and equipment are properly maintained and kept in proper working condition. Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals. Working knowledge of personal computers (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) and Hyatt software systems such as WMS (Payroll System), Birchstreet (Purchase Orders), Microsoft Outlook (Email), and Oracle (Accounting). Knowledge of Toro E-OSMAC irrigation field controllers, Toro SitePro 2.2 central irrigation control system and Toro Tweather computer software systems.
Qualifications
· Associates degree or Bachelor degree in Horticulture or related field of study and two years of landscape maintenance experience or any combination of education and experience sufficient to perform duties of position. · Working knowledge of the characteristics, growth habits and proper cultivation of a wide selection of plant materials specifics to south central Texas, including native plant materials. · Knowledge of the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers, soil conditioners and pest control methods and materials. · Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment; to prepare clear and concise reports; and to maintain effective employee and public relations. · Ability to obtain a Texas Restricted Use Pesticide Applicators License (Commercial Ornamental and Turf) within 90 days of date in position. · Ability to understand, follows, and transmits written and oral instructions.
